What is RAM? Random Access Memory Explained

Part of the Best 10 Singapore GlossaryTech & Gadgets › RAM

RAM (Random Access Memory) is your computer’s short-term working memory. It temporarily stores data your system is actively using so the CPU can access it almost instantly — far faster than reading from a hard drive or SSD.

RAM vs storage — what’s the difference?

People often confuse RAM with storage (SSD or HDD). Here’s the key distinction: RAM holds data temporarily while you’re working — it clears when you shut down. Storage holds data permanently — your files, apps and operating system. More RAM means you can run more applications simultaneously without your system slowing down. More storage means you can save more files.

Can you upgrade RAM in Singapore?

Many desktops and older laptops allow RAM upgrades — this is one of the most affordable ways to speed up a slow machine. However, many modern slim laptops (including recent MacBooks and some ultrabooks) have RAM soldered directly to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Always check before buying. Laptop repair shops in Singapore can advise on upgradability. See: Best Laptop Repair Singapore.
