What is a CPU? Central Processing Unit Explained
Part of the Best 10 Singapore Glossary › Tech & Gadgets › CPU
A CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the primary processor of a computer — often called the “brain” of the machine. It executes instructions from programs, manages system operations, and coordinates every other component in your PC or laptop.
What does a CPU do?
Every action you take on a computer — opening an app, loading a website, running a game — involves the CPU processing instructions. Unlike a GPU which handles thousands of small tasks in parallel, the CPU is optimised for sequential processing of complex logic. The faster and more capable your CPU, the more responsive your system feels overall.
Intel vs AMD in Singapore
Intel Core
Popular series: Core i5, i7, i9 (consumer) and Core Ultra for newer laptops. Generally strong in single-core performance — good for gaming. Widely available at Sim Lim Square and major retailers in Singapore.
AMD Ryzen
Popular series: Ryzen 5, 7, 9. Excellent multi-core performance — great for content creation, video editing and multitasking. Often offers better value per dollar than Intel at the same tier.
Key CPU specs explained
| Spec | What it means | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Cores | Number of independent processing units | 6+ cores for gaming; 8+ for content creation |
| Threads | Virtual cores for multitasking | More threads = better multitasking |
| Clock speed | Processing speed in GHz | Higher GHz = snappier single-task performance |
| Cache | Ultra-fast onboard memory | Larger cache reduces latency in gaming |
| TDP | Thermal Design Power (watts) | Higher TDP needs better cooling — important for Singapore’s heat |
CPU and Singapore’s climate
Singapore’s year-round heat and humidity means CPU cooling is more critical here than in temperate countries. A quality CPU cooler and fresh thermal paste are essential — especially in custom PC builds. Overheating CPUs will throttle performance and shorten lifespan. See: Best Custom PC Builder Singapore.
